Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to Academic Mentoring! I look forward to working with each of you this year. As your mentor, I will provide support to help you have a successful and enjoyable school year. The magnet program can and is supposed to be challenging. You have proven through your application and admittance to the program that you belong here and you have what it takes to be successful here.
I am excited to share a few simple things with you that will help make your life easier. Some skills that you will learn and implement during our academic mentoring class include the following:
Not only will we learn to become better scholars, we will share successes, troubleshoot difficulties, and spend time working on homework and projects from your core classes. We will also have fun getting to know each other!
Before coming to class each day, decide what you will work on and bring all relevant materials. Our class meets on A days, but you should also bring homework and materials for B day assignments! Additionally, you and I will confer frequently about your academic progress in your core classes.
Come prepared to our mentoring class! Bring these items to every class:
Tools for SuccessYou have several great tools to manage and monitor your workload and your academic progress. I expect the following of you every day:
Contract:
High expectations, no excuses!
I believe in you and will therefore hold you to the highest of standards. I also believe that making excuses only gets in the way of our progress. Therefore, we will create a contract together that will outline student responsibilities and expectations for all aspects of our class. By signing the contract, students and parents are expressing their commitment to the mentoring program and to their academic success in the Kealing magnet program.
Supplies:
You will need an accordion folder that has ten dividers. You will use this to organize your homework. We will create a “to do” and a “to turn in” section for each of your core classes. This system will allow you to easily keep track of what you need to do and what you need to turn in. If you would like the school to provide you with an accordion folder, let me know and I will get one for you. Please bring your accordion folder to class every day. We will clean out accordion folders the first mentoring class of each week.
Grading Policy:
Please take a few moments to fill out the informational sheet with as much detail as you can provide.
I look forward to working with you, both students and parents, as well as your teachers this year as you continue to grow as scholars.
Sincerely,
Keri Jaworski
