Willkommen!
Welcome to Kealing Middle School and German Class! Over the course of two years (6th/7th grade – German 1a and 7th/8th grade – German 1b) we will work on six thematic units built around short stories, articles, songs, advertisements, poetry, film, podcasts, radio, and various student projects. The thematic units are Personal and Public Identities, Families and Communities, Contemporary Life, Science and Technology, Global Challenges, and Beauty and Aesthetics. Students will develop their skills in listening, reading, writing, and speaking German. We will study various cultural and historical aspects of German-speaking countries as they relate to the above themes.
Students in all German classes need to be aware that this course moves at a quick pace, and they should expect about 15-20 minutes of homework every night. There will be exceptions for major projects. Even if there is not a written assignment due, students should be constantly practicing vocabulary.
Every student is required to have a www.quizlet.com account. In an effort to reduce paper waste and provide better tools for vocabulary practice, all vocabulary lists will be posted according to your class on Quizlet. I do not issue a textbook. If you do not have access to a computer or need a paper copy, please let me know and I can print one for you. Please request to be part of “Kealing Deutsch 1A” or “Kealing Deutsch 1B”. Once I accept your request, you will have access to all of the vocabulary lists.
If you have any questions about office hours, assignments, notes, upcoming events, or other German related activities, please refer to my website. Daily plans and most assignments can be found as a word document attachment as well. I will do my best to update my site as necessary, but please remember that any changes announced in class take precedence over the website. Therefore, it is critical that students note these changes.

Classroom Expectations:
Required Materials: Please have a binder or folder to keep loose papers (worksheets, quizzes, etc.) and a notebook or section in your binder with loose leaf where you will keep notes, journal entries and television logs. You will need a pen or pencil and your German binder/notebook every day!
A personal German dictionary is useful but there are many online dictionaries that work as well. Please check the “Useful Websites” link on my website to find a list of resources.
Suggested Materials: I would be very grateful for donations of classroom supplies to be shared by everybody. The following items would be helpful: lots of Kleenex, markers, hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, small prizes (stickers, pencils, erasers) and dry erase markers.
Grading Policy: Quality work is expected. Students will be graded on the following:
35% Tests & Projects
30% Quizzes
20% Homework
15% In-class work (both written & spoken)
Make-up Policy: Students have one week to make up late work. If the work is made up within that week, 70% credit will be given. After that, no credit will be given unless there are special circumstances. Quizzes and tests need to be made up at a time agreed upon between the student and teacher. Your new grade will be an average of the first quiz/test and the re-take. Ask your teacher the best time to make up or retake an assessment. Please do not waste time re-taking a quiz or test for which you are not adequately prepared. If your assignment is turned in late due to an excused absence, be sure to write “EXCUSED ABSENCE” on the top of your paper with the date you were gone. Otherwise it may only be given 70%.
Absent/Tardy: Attendance is essential! If you are absent, please ask a classmate or check the website for the missing assignment. If your assignment is turned in late due to an excused absence, be sure to write “EXCUSED ABSENCE” on the top of your paper with the date you were gone. Otherwise, points may be deducted.
Students are considered tardy if they are not seated when the bell rings, so please hurry to class. Remember that bathroom passes are not issued during the first 10 and last 10 minutes of class.
Discipline Plan: Students disrupting class and not following classroom expectations will go through these procedures: verbal warning, teacher-student conference, parent phone call, teacher-parent-student conference, and referral to office.
Office Hours/Tutoring: Wednesdays after school from 3-4 PM or by appointment.

Classroom Expectations:
- Please do not eat or drink in my classroom unless given permission to do so. If you are given permission, you must dispose of trash accordingly or this privilege will be revoked. You may have your own bottle of water.
- Always patrol your area and clean up any mess or supplies before leaving the room.
- Cell phones and the brown paper bag! We will be implementing the school wide rule of keeping all cell phones put away unless you are given permission by the teacher. If you are using your phone without permission, you will be given a brown bag to store it until class is over.
- Never use an online translator to do class work, homework, essays or projects. This is considered cheating. However, the use of online dictionaries to look up words or phrases is permitted. (https://dict.leo.org)
- Remember to use German when asking questions and speaking in class! As soon as you enter the room, it is a “German Only” zone.
- Please be respectful of your classmates and teacher at all times.
- If you need to borrow a supply from me, you must first ask in German and then return it when finished.
- Every day you should come to class prepared and ready to work.
- High expectations. No excuses.
